 The Cottages of Banner Elk are carefully sculpted into the same hillside where the historic Banner Elk Hotel once stood.
No one knows the old hotel's exact age, but most records indicate it to be over 150 years old. The original inn was founded by the Banner family sometime before the Civil War. It was then purchased by Robert Lee and Blanch Von Canon Lowe in the early 1890's.
The Lowes expanded it to include 20 guest rooms, parlors, full kitchen and dining room, lush gardens and grape vines, and its signature large wrap-around porches, which offered panoramic vistas of the town's surrounding mountains... all viewed from the relaxing comfort of the hotel's famous rocking chairs.
Charles Lowe and his sister, Fannie, ran the hotel until its closing in 1973. Under their nurturing care, it hosted seasonal guests from the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, California, and even as far away as England. For decades, it was the center of community activities, featuring nightly string band dances and offering generous home-cooked meals 3 times daily. As much as anything, the hotel represented Banner Elk's special mountain hospitality and heritage.

The Cottages of Banner Elk are designed to preserve the unique charm and character of the old hotel. Original wormy chestnut wood and other materials were carefully harvested from the hotel structure and incorporated into the new construction.
